Program
|
- Provides Alternative Sentencing options for mothers convicted of non-violent crimes and who have custody of young children and/or are pregnant. Participants are court ordered by a judge to complete the Summit House program as part of their probation.
- Keeps Families Together by providing a 12 – 24 month residential program for female offenders and their children. Instead of mom going to prison and her child going into foster care, they come to Summit House as a family.
- Breaks the Cycle of Crime by keeping the family together and providing treatment. Research indicates that children of incarcerated parents are six times more likely than other children to become involved in the justice system. By maintaining the family unit, teaching parenting skills, addressing potential developmental delays, and providing treatment Summit House works to break this cycle for the children as well as mothers.
- Uses Behavior Modification techniques which offer a systematic program of rewards and consequences. Women progress from being unable to leave the facility without a staff member, to being employed and fully independent when they complete the program.
- Prevents Attachment Disorders that may occur in young children and that often hinders their ability to form healthy relationships as adolescents and adults.Research shows that removal from a primary caretaker during early childhood may result in a myriad of social problems including developmental delays, self-blame, depression and anti-social behaviors.
- Saves Community Dollars, in fact, Summit House saves the taxpayers of North Carolina over $1,000,000 each year by providing an alternative to prison and by avoiding the high cost of foster care necessary when the parent is incarcerated.
